Atlassian Williams F1 Team have confirmed that they will not take part in the upcoming Barcelona Shakedown, opting instead to focus their resources on maximising performance ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The shakedown, scheduled to run from January 26–30 at the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya, was introduced to give teams additional early mileage under the new technical regulations, alongside the traditional pre-season test in Bahrain.
Why Williams Are Sitting Out
In an official statement, the team explained that delays in the FW48 programme have led to a strategic decision to skip the collective running in Spain.
“Atlassian Williams F1 Team has taken the decision not to participate in next week’s shakedown test in Barcelona following delays in the FW48 programme as we continue to push for maximum car performance.”
Rather than running at Barcelona, Williams will carry out private testing and a Virtual Track Testing (VTT) programme, ensuring the car is fully optimised ahead of the first official on-track running of the year.
Focus Shifts to Bahrain and Melbourne
The Grove-based outfit confirmed that its preparations will now centre around the official pre-season test in Bahrain, which takes place from February 11–13, before attention turns to the season-opening race in Melbourne.
“The team will instead conduct a series of tests including a VTT programme next week with the 2026 car to prepare for the first official test in Bahrain and the first race of the season in Melbourne.”
A Calculated Risk for 2026
Skipping shared running is not without risk, but Williams appear confident that targeted development and simulation work will better serve their long-term goals under the new ruleset. With 2026 marking a fresh technical era, every decision carries extra weight — and Williams are clearly betting on preparation quality over early mileage.
“We are looking forward to getting on track in the coming weeks and want to thank all our fans for your continued support – there is a lot to look forward to together in 2026.”
