How F1 Teams Make Money: Revenue Mix Calculator

Formula 1 teams can earn revenue from far more than race results.

Central Formula 1 payments may form an important part of a team’s income, but sponsorship, merchandise, hospitality, technical services and shareholder support can also play major roles.

Common F1 team revenue streams

Formula 1 central payments include commercial distributions made under the sport’s governing commercial agreements.

Sponsorship and partnerships can include title sponsorships, technical partnerships, supplier relationships and broader marketing agreements.

Merchandise and licensing may include team clothing, branded products, gaming rights and licensed commercial products.

Hospitality and experiences can include premium guest programmes, paddock experiences and corporate events.

Technical and customer services may include power-unit supply, components, engineering services or other permitted commercial arrangements.

Shareholder funding represents capital or support supplied by an owner, manufacturer or parent company.

Revenue is not the same as profit

A team can generate substantial revenue while still reporting a limited profit or a loss. Revenue must fund staff, facilities, manufacturing, travel, development and the wider operation.

The financial regulations also control Relevant Costs rather than every expense incurred by the broader business.

Important limitation

The starting figures are hypothetical examples. The tool does not estimate a specific team unless verified figures are entered by the reader.
