Tsunoda Replaces Lawson at Red Bull Racing

Yuki Tsunoda will replace Liam Lawson at Red Bull Racing starting from the Japanese Grand Prix, as the Milton Keynes-based team responds swiftly to a difficult start to Lawson’s 2025 Formula 1 season.

Lawson initially joined Red Bull Racing as Max Verstappen’s teammate following Sergio Perez’s departure, having impressed during his stint in 2024 with AlphaTauri (now Visa Cash App Racing Bulls). However, the New Zealander faced a challenging opening two races, struggling notably at the Australian Grand Prix, where he crashed in tough conditions, and later finishing 12th at the Chinese GP after penalties promoted him from 15th.

Speculation mounted quickly that Lawson might be replaced early in the season, and the team has confirmed Tsunoda’s promotion ahead of the Suzuka weekend on April 4-6. Lawson returns to Racing Bulls, where he previously drove alongside Tsunoda, to partner with rookie Isack Hadjar.

Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner emphasized that the decision was performance-driven, stating: “It has been difficult to see Liam struggle with the RB21, and we have collectively decided to make an early switch. Yuki’s experience will greatly benefit the development of our car.”

Tsunoda, now in his fifth Formula 1 season, has demonstrated steady improvement since debuting in 2021. His strong performances last season, contributing significantly to his team’s points haul, positioned him as a valuable asset for Red Bull Racing. Although initially overlooked in favor of Lawson, Tsunoda expressed understanding of the team’s decision but now receives his opportunity to race alongside Verstappen at his home Grand Prix in Japan.

Racing Bulls’ Team Principal Laurent Mekies praised Tsunoda’s progress, highlighting his “sensational” improvements and expressing pride in seeing the Japanese driver move to Red Bull Racing. He also reiterated the team’s commitment to supporting Lawson’s development, confident in his potential and future contributions alongside Hadjar.

Red Bull Racing remains focused on reclaiming the Constructors’ title and retaining Verstappen’s Drivers’ Championship, with Tsunoda’s experience expected to be crucial for the ongoing development of the RB21.
