McLaren Miami Upgrade Looks Like A Real Warning To Mercedes

McLaren arrived in Miami needing more than a decent result. They needed proof that their 2026 car could move back towards the front of the field.
They got it.
A Sprint one-two, a Grand Prix double podium, and real pressure on Mercedes made Miami McLaren’s strongest weekend of the season so far. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri did not just collect points — they changed the tone of the championship conversation.
Mercedes still won the Grand Prix, but McLaren left Miami looking like the team most capable of making them nervous.
McLaren Miami Upgrade Delivered At The Right Time
The phrase “upgrade package” gets thrown around a lot in Formula 1, but Miami was one of those weekends where the improvement was visible.
McLaren looked sharper from the start of the Sprint weekend. Norris converted pole into victory on Saturday, while Piastri completed a controlled one-two for the team. That mattered because Mercedes had looked so strong in the opening part of the season.
Then came Sunday.
Norris pushed Kimi Antonelli hard in the Grand Prix and finished just over three seconds behind the Mercedes driver. Piastri completed the podium, giving McLaren a double top-three finish and a major points haul.
This was not a lucky result. It was the first real sign that McLaren’s development path is starting to bite.
Norris Needed This Weekend
For Norris, Miami felt like a very important response.
He has already proven he can win races and fight at the front, but 2026 had started with Mercedes holding the strongest hand. Miami gave Norris a weekend where he could show that McLaren are not out of the fight.
The Sprint win was clean. The Grand Prix pace was strong. And even though he missed out on the Sunday victory, second place still felt like a statement.
Norris did not leave Miami with the biggest trophy, but he left with momentum.
Piastri’s Podium Matters Too
Oscar Piastri’s weekend was slightly quieter than Norris’, but still very valuable for McLaren.
Second in the Sprint and third in the Grand Prix is exactly the kind of support result a team needs if it wants to challenge Mercedes over a season. Piastri did not need to be spectacular to make the weekend work. He needed to be consistent, fast, and there when the opportunity came.
That is what he delivered.
For McLaren, having both drivers in the mix is the real threat to Mercedes. A one-car challenge can be managed. A two-car challenge changes strategy, pressure, and points.
Mercedes Are Still Ahead, But The Gap Looks Smaller
The important thing is not to overstate it.
Mercedes still won. Antonelli still delivered under pressure. McLaren did not suddenly become the clear fastest team.
But Miami made the front of the grid feel less one-sided.
If McLaren can keep developing at this rate, the fight could become much more uncomfortable for Mercedes. The next race will matter because one strong weekend can be track-specific. Two or three strong weekends become a trend.
What Comes Next For McLaren?
The challenge now is simple: prove Miami was not a one-off.
McLaren need to carry this performance into the next phase of the season. They have shown that the car can fight Mercedes, but they now need to turn pressure into wins.
That is the next step.
Miami gave McLaren belief. The races after Miami will show whether that belief is justified.
