Dr Helmut Marko Steps Down as Red Bull Motorsport Advisor

Red Bull Racing have confirmed that Dr Helmut Marko will step down from his role as Motorsport Advisor at the end of the year, drawing the curtain on a remarkable 20-year association with the energy drinks giant.
The Austrian has been one of the most influential figures in modern Formula 1, overseeing a period in which Red Bull secured six Constructors’ Championships and eight Drivers’ titles, while building one of the sport’s most aggressive and successful driver development systems.
Marko’s departure comes just six months after Christian Horner’s exit as Team Principal, marking another major shift in Red Bull’s leadership structure.
Architect of the Red Bull Junior Programme
Throughout his tenure, Marko was the driving force behind the Red Bull Junior Programme, personally guiding the careers of young drivers and deciding who would earn a chance in Formula 1 with Racing Bulls or Red Bull Racing.
In total, 20 drivers progressed to Formula 1 under his watch, including Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, who together delivered all eight of Red Bull’s Drivers’ Championships.
The most recent graduate is Arvid Lindblad, who will make his Formula 1 debut with Racing Bulls next season, continuing Marko’s long-standing legacy of youth promotion.
Praise from Within the Red Bull Family
Current Team Principal Laurent Mekies paid tribute to Marko’s impact, calling his departure “the end of a remarkably successful chapter”.
“Helmut has been such an integral part of our team and of Red Bull’s entire motor racing programme for more than two decades,” Mekies said.
“He is a real racer at heart – always pushing us to the limit and always prepared to take risks in pursuit of our goals.”
Mekies also revealed that Marko, alongside CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, played a key role in bringing him back into the Red Bull organisation, first in Faenza and later in Milton Keynes.
Marko: ‘The Right Moment to Step Away’
Speaking on his decision, Marko reflected on a lifetime in motorsport and the timing of his departure.
“The past 20-plus years at Red Bull have been an extraordinary and extremely successful journey,” Marko said.
“Narrowly missing out on the World Championship this season made it clear to me that now is the right moment to end this long and intense chapter.”
Despite stepping aside, Marko expressed confidence that Red Bull would soon return to title-winning form.
Mintzlaff: ‘An Extraordinary Era Comes to a Close’
Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff described Marko’s exit as the end of an era, highlighting his decisive influence on the team’s success.
“Helmut played a decisive role in all key strategic decisions that made Red Bull Racing what it is today,” Mintzlaff said.
“His instinct for exceptional talent and his courage to make clear decisions left a lasting impact on Formula 1.”
Mintzlaff added that while Marko’s departure will leave a significant gap, the team fully respects his decision.
A Legacy That Shaped Formula 1
As noted by F1 correspondent Lawrence Barretto, Marko’s influence extended far beyond Red Bull itself.
He was instrumental in convincing founder Dietrich Mateschitz to hand Max Verstappen his F1 debut in 2015, beating Mercedes to the Dutchman’s signature. His hands-on, uncompromising approach helped shape a generation of drivers now spread across the grid.
In 2025 alone, seven drivers on the current Formula 1 grid came through the Red Bull system – a testament to the enduring success of Marko’s vision.
Red Bull Enter a New Chapter
Nothing lasts forever in Formula 1, and Helmut Marko’s departure represents another step in Red Bull Racing’s evolution.
While his absence will undoubtedly be felt, the structures he built – and the champions he helped create – will continue to define Red Bull’s identity long after his final season in the paddock.
