Cadillac Reveals Special Testing Livery Ahead of F1 Debut

A major milestone on that journey was reached this week as Mark Reuss, President of General Motors, officially unveiled the Cadillac Formula 1 Team’s Special Edition testing livery at GM’s new global headquarters, the Hudson’s Detroit building.

A First Look at Cadillac’s F1 Identity

The newly revealed livery will be used during the all-team Shakedown Week in Barcelona from January 26 to 30, ahead of the team’s full race livery reveal scheduled for February 8. While distinct from the final design that will compete throughout the season, the testing livery plays a crucial role in Formula 1’s pre-season development phase.

In line with long-standing F1 tradition, testing liveries are designed to help obscure aerodynamic details while cars run their first competitive laps. Cadillac’s approach blends this functional requirement with a strong visual identity, ensuring the brand’s presence is unmistakable even before racing begins.

Design Rooted in Heritage and Innovation

Developed through a transatlantic collaboration between the GM Global Design team and the Cadillac Formula 1 Team, the Special Edition livery reflects both Detroit’s design heritage and Cadillac’s future-focused ambitions.

The monochrome concept creates a premium, technical appearance anchored by a modern interpretation of the iconic Cadillac crest and shield. A large crest draped over the rear of the car not only disguises sensitive aerodynamic surfaces but also boldly announces Cadillac’s arrival on the global motorsport stage.

Vertical precision geometric patterns, rendered in alternating gloss and matte finishes, run across the bodywork. These elements serve a dual purpose: masking development details while showcasing Cadillac’s distinctive design DNA. Clean line work and restrained colour blocking further reinforce a refined, performance-driven aesthetic aligned with Formula 1’s cutting edge.

As a nod to the global effort behind the project, the names of the founding members of the Cadillac Formula 1 Team from both the United States and the United Kingdom are incorporated into the livery design.

The unveiling formed part of GM’s opening-week celebrations at its new Detroit headquarters, where a replica Formula 1 car wearing the Barcelona Shakedown livery is currently on display. The car will also be showcased at the Detroit Auto Show until January 25, giving fans an early opportunity to see Cadillac’s F1 vision up close.
