Why Max Verstappen Was Called ‘Franz Hermann’ at the Emilia-Romagna GP in 2025

Formula 1 fans were amused and intrigued when Max Verstappen was humorously referred to as “Franz Hermann” by F1’s social media channels after the 2025 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. However, this wasn’t just a random error—it has an interesting story behind it.

The Real Reason: Nürburgring Record-Breaker

Max Verstappen adopted the pseudonym “Franz Hermann” during an official Nürburgring Endurance Series test, where he drove Emil Frey Racing’s Ferrari 296 GT3. The alias was meant to help the four-time Formula 1 World Champion fly under the radar while supporting his protégé, Thierry Vermeulen, during sessions at the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Rumors circulated that Verstappen broke the existing GT3 lap record of 7m 49.578s, previously set by Norwegian racer Christian Krognes. Verstappen confirmed the achievement ahead of the Emilia-Romagna GP, describing his first experience on the notoriously challenging 14-mile circuit as “fantastic.”

Nordschleife Experience

While Verstappen had never previously driven the Nordschleife in a real car, his extensive sim racing background provided invaluable preparation. “I’ve never driven there in real life, not even with a road car,” Verstappen admitted, “but I did spend a lot of time on the simulator doing thousands of laps, so that helped.”

Verstappen noted minor differences from his sim experience, such as barrier placements and grip levels, but quickly adapted. His primary intention wasn’t chasing records; rather, it was about enjoying the experience and supporting Vermeulen’s transition from sim racing to real-world competition.

Future Plans?

Despite expressing enthusiasm, Verstappen remained non-committal about participating in future races at the Nordschleife. Competing officially would require him to secure a DMSB Permit, necessitating participation in multiple racing categories or obtaining special dispensation.

The “Franz Hermann” episode, initially baffling, ultimately became a memorable highlight of Verstappen’s 2025 motorsport adventures, showcasing his passion beyond Formula 1.
