Mercedes Still Lead F1 2026, But Miami Proved The Pressure Is Coming
Follow 2026 Season UpdatesFollow updates
Mercedes won the Miami Grand Prix, extended their strong start to 2026, and still left with the biggest result of the weekend.
So why did Miami feel slightly uncomfortable?
Because for the first time this season, the chasing pack looked much closer.
Kimi Antonelli delivered again, Lando Norris pushed hard, McLaren put both cars on the podium, and Red Bull showed signs of life with its upgraded car. Mercedes still have the advantage, but Miami made one thing clear: they are no longer racing in clean air.
Mercedes Miami Win Was Impressive
It is easy to focus on McLaren’s progress and forget the obvious: Mercedes still won.
Antonelli’s drive was mature, calm and controlled under pressure. He had to fight for it, especially with Norris close behind, but he still delivered the result.
That is what championship-leading teams do. They win even when the weekend is not comfortable.
Mercedes did not dominate Miami in the way they may have hoped, but they still walked away with the victory. That matters.
Antonelli Keeps Raising The Standard
Antonelli’s start to 2026 continues to look remarkable.
Miami gave him another pressure test, and again, he passed it. The young Mercedes driver had to recover from early race pressure, manage the threat from McLaren, and still bring the car home first.
For a driver still building his Formula 1 reputation, these are the weekends that matter most.
Winning from a dominant position is impressive. Winning when Norris is close enough to keep asking questions is even more valuable.
Russell’s Fourth Place Was Damage Limitation
George Russell’s fourth place was also important for Mercedes, even if it was not the headline result.
On a weekend where he did not quite match Antonelli, Russell still scored strongly and helped Mercedes protect their constructors’ position. That is exactly what Mercedes need if they are going to hold off McLaren across the season.
The bigger question is whether Russell can regularly put himself into the win fight again.
Mercedes need both drivers operating at the front because McLaren now look capable of attacking with two cars.
Why Miami Was A Warning
The warning for Mercedes is not that they lost. They did not.
The warning is that McLaren were close enough to make them work for it. Red Bull’s upgrade gave Verstappen more pace. Ferrari had moments of threat. Williams also showed that the midfield is becoming more competitive.
That matters because once development momentum shifts, races can change quickly.
Mercedes may still have the strongest overall package, but Miami showed that their rivals are not standing still.
What Comes Next For Mercedes?
The next phase of the season will test whether Mercedes can respond as quickly as the teams chasing them.
If their upcoming upgrades work, Miami may simply look like a weekend where they were pressured but still too good. If McLaren and Red Bull continue to close in, Miami may be remembered as the first sign that the 2026 fight was tightening.
For now, Mercedes remain the benchmark.
But Miami proved they are no longer untouchable.
