Aston Martin have confirmed a major leadership reshuffle ahead of Formula 1’s 2026 regulation overhaul, with legendary designer Adrian Newey set to become the team’s new Team Principal.
Newey’s appointment comes as an extension of his current role as Managing Technical Partner, a position he took up earlier this year after leaving Red Bull following nearly two decades of success.
The move underlines Aston Martin’s intent to fully align its technical vision and leadership as it prepares to enter a new era as a full works team.
Expanded Role for a Design Icon
Since joining Aston Martin on March 1, Newey has already been deeply involved in shaping the team’s future, working on the car that will compete under the sweeping new 2026 chassis and power unit regulations.
As Team Principal, Newey will now oversee the technical organization in its entirety, including the car’s trackside operations, further centralizing technical decision-making around one of the most successful figures in Formula 1 history.
The team believes this structure will maximize efficiency and place performance firmly at the heart of its operations.
Andy Cowell Moves into Strategic Position
Current Team Principal and CEO Andy Cowell will transition into the newly defined role of Chief Strategy Officer.
Cowell has spent the past year implementing significant structural changes within Aston Martin as it prepares to become a full works outfit in partnership with Honda from 2026.
In his new role, Cowell will focus on optimizing the technical collaboration between Aston Martin and its key partners, including Honda, fuel supplier Aramco and lubricant partner Valvoline — a crucial task as the team integrates an all-new power unit.
Leadership Change Designed for Efficiency
Aston Martin have stressed that the revised leadership structure is designed to capitalize on the individual strengths of both Newey and Cowell.
Andy Cowell will report directly to Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll, who will continue to oversee the business and commercial functions of the team.
The team believes the changes will sharpen its competitive focus as it gears up for one of the most significant rule changes in modern Formula 1 history.
Voices from Inside the Team
Reflecting on his expanded responsibilities, Newey said he has been impressed by the talent already within Aston Martin and is eager to help guide the team through a pivotal period.
He highlighted the importance of Cowell’s new role in ensuring seamless integration between the chassis, power unit and technical partners as the team prepares for the challenges of 2026.
Lawrence Stroll praised Cowell’s leadership over the past year, emphasizing his role in building a cohesive, high-performance culture and supporting the decision to realign responsibilities in the team’s best interests.
Cowell, meanwhile, described the move as a natural next step after laying the groundwork for Aston Martin’s transformation into a works team.
A Crucial Moment for Aston Martin
The announcement comes during a difficult season for Aston Martin, who currently sit eighth in the Teams’ Championship — three places lower than where they finished last year — with just two race weekends remaining.
Despite the struggles, the team remains optimistic that Newey’s influence, combined with the upcoming regulation reset and works partnership with Honda, can mark the beginning of a new competitive chapter.
With 2026 fast approaching, Aston Martin are clearly positioning themselves for a bold reset — one led by the most successful designer in Formula 1 history.
