Honda Confirm 2026 Power Unit Launch Date Ahead of Aston Martin Partnership

Honda have officially confirmed the launch date of their all-new Formula 1 power unit, marking a significant milestone ahead of their full return to the sport in 2026 as the exclusive engine supplier to Aston Martin.
The Japanese manufacturer will unveil the new power unit on January 20, 2026, at a special event in Tokyo, signaling the start of what both parties have described as a bold new era under Formula 1’s radically revised technical regulations.
Drawing a line under the Red Bull era
The announcement also symbolizes Honda’s final step away from their hugely successful collaboration with Red Bull. That partnership famously delivered the 2021 World Championship with Max Verstappen, before Honda gradually reduced its direct involvement while Red Bull established its own in-house power unit operation.
In 2023, Honda confirmed that they would instead align with Aston Martin for the next regulation cycle, a move designed to give the manufacturer a clean-sheet return to Formula 1 under the 2026 ruleset.
Power unit reveal set for global livestream
Honda confirmed that the Tokyo launch event will be livestreamed on YouTube, allowing fans around the world to follow the reveal in real time.
The event will feature keynote addresses from:
- Toshihiro Mibe, President and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
- Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin
- Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1
In an official statement, Honda highlighted the significance of the project:
“This is the Japanese marque’s first power unit under the dramatically reformed regulations, which see a 50% internal combustion engine and 50% electric power split.”
Honda added that the event will outline both the technical direction of the new power unit and the shared ambitions between Honda and Aston Martin as they prepare to compete at the highest level of motorsport.
Aston Martin positioning for a regulation reset
Aston Martin have been clear in recent seasons that the 2026 regulation change represents a major opportunity to reset their competitive trajectory. The team have previously relied on Mercedes for power units, gearboxes and rear suspension components, but the switch to Honda marks a move towards a more integrated, works-style approach.
The Silverstone-based outfit finished seventh in the Constructors’ Championship this season, but structural changes behind the scenes suggest a longer-term vision.
Legendary designer Adrian Newey is set to take over as Team Principal at the start of next year, replacing Andy Cowell, who will move into the role of Chief Strategy Officer. Cowell’s new position will focus heavily on optimizing the technical relationship with Honda as Aston Martin aim to establish themselves as consistent frontrunners.
Honda’s next era in Formula 1
Honda also used the announcement to underline the historical importance of their return.
“2026 marks the start of Honda’s new era in Formula 1, having first entered the sport in 1964. Since then, Honda has established itself as one of the most successful power unit manufacturers in the sport’s history.”
With a clean regulatory slate, a factory-backed partnership, and long-term commitment from both sides, the Honda–Aston Martin alliance is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing storylines heading into Formula 1’s next generation.
