Formula 1 Confirms Portuguese Grand Prix Return
Formula 1 has confirmed that the Portuguese Grand Prix will return in 2027 and 2028, following a new two-year agreement with the Portuguese Government, Turismo de Portugal, and circuit promoter Parkalgar.
The announcement sees the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, widely known as Portimão, back on the F1 calendar after its last appearances during the 2020 and 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, stepping in as a reliable venue when the championship required reliabilityand flexibility.
Its successful hosting of back-to-back race weekends quickly earned praise from teams, drivers, and fans alike, cementing its reputation as a modern Formula 1-ready circuit.
A Circuit That Demands Precision and Bravery
Set in Portugal’s scenic Algarve region, the 4.6km circuit is known for its dramatic elevation changes, blind crests, and flowing high-speed sections.
Often described as a “rollercoaster,” Portimão presents drivers with a technical challenge unlike any other, with its plunging run into the final corner creating overtaking opportunities and thrilling finishes on the pit straight.
Portugal’s Long-Standing Formula 1 Heritage
Portugal’s connection to Formula 1 dates back to 1958, when the country hosted its first Grand Prix in Porto. Since then, the sport has also raced at Monsanto and Estoril, producing some of the championship’s most memorable moments.
Legendary drivers including Stirling Moss, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Nigel Mansell have all won on Portuguese soil, with Senna’s first career victory coming at Estoril in 1985.
Hamilton’s Record-Breaking Moment at Portimão
More recently, Portimão entered Formula 1 history in 2021 when Lewis Hamilton secured his 92nd career victory, overtaking Michael Schumacher’s long-standing record for most wins.
Hamilton remains the only driver on the current grid to have won at the Algarve circuit, having also claimed victory there during the 2020 season.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed his delight at the circuit’s return, praising both the on-track action and the passion of Portuguese fans.
He also highlighted the growing global demand to host Formula 1 events, thanking national and regional authorities for their continued support in bringing the championship back to Portugal.
Portugal’s Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, emphasised the wider economic benefits of hosting the Grand Prix, citing positive impacts across tourism, trade, services, and small businesses, while strengthening Portugal’s international profile.
A Major Boost for the Algarve Region
Jaime Costa, Chairman and CEO of the Algarve International Circuit, described Formula 1’s return as a major milestone for the region, crediting long-term government support for making the agreement possible.
He added that Portimão’s unique layout is perfectly suited to producing dramatic racing and unforgettable moments for fans both at the circuit and around the world.
