Kyalami One Step Closer to Hosting Formula 1

The dream of bringing Formula 1 back to South Africa is no longer a distant fantasy. On 18 June 2025, the FIA formally approved the Grade 1 upgrade plans for Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, putting the historic venue one step closer to rejoining the Formula 1 calendar.

The announcement, made at a press conference held at Kyalami, was led by Circuit Owner Toby Venter and Clive Bowen, Founder of Apex Circuit Design.

Built in 1961, Kyalami has long held legendary status in global motorsport, having hosted 21 F1 Grands Prix and welcoming top-tier events like the Kyalami 9-Hour and MotoGP. Its favourable weather, strategic location between Johannesburg and Pretoria, and iconic racing heritage make it a natural candidate for Formula 1’s long-awaited return to the African continent.

FIA Greenlights Grade 1 Upgrade Plans

The FIA’s acceptance of Kyalami’s final design proposal — developed by the internationally acclaimed Apex Circuit Design, also responsible for the Miami F1 layout — is a significant milestone. The upgrade does not alter the circuit layout but focuses on critical safety improvements: enhanced run-off areas, improved barrier systems, advanced debris fencing, kerbs, and better drainage.

“This is a defining moment for South African motorsport,” said Venter. “When we acquired Kyalami in 2014, we made a commitment to restore it — not just as a world-class venue, but as a beacon for motorsport across the African continent.”

Three-Year Timeline for Completion

The FIA’s approval comes with a three-year window to complete the necessary upgrades. To avoid disrupting ongoing business activities, construction will be phased during non-event periods. The final milestone will be a comprehensive FIA inspection, after which Kyalami could officially become Africa’s only FIA Grade 1 circuit — and potentially the continent’s gateway back onto the F1 calendar.

“This is a light-touch upgrade in engineering terms, but one that enhances the already excellent circuit standards to meet modern Grade 1 requirements,” Bowen noted.

Ready for Formula 1’s Return

Kyalami already holds a Grade 2 license following a 2016 revamp and has since proven itself as a vibrant, multi-use facility hosting exhibitions, corporate events, and motorsport festivals year-round. With the latest plans in motion, the circuit is now poised to reclaim its place on the world stage.

As Venter concluded: “Today, we turn the page to a bold new chapter for Kyalami. We are ready for the return of Formula 1 to African soil.”
